 what are anonymous log ins? And if i turn the board off for maintenance only staff can log i right?

Anonymous logins are users who when they log in do not appear in the active user list.

When you turn your board offline, only users in the user groups which have the permission to log in while the board is offline can log in.
ACP -> Users & Groups -> Groups -> (group name) -> Use offline board will be set to "yes" or "no" for each group. By default only the "Admins" group have this setting set to "yes."

 Log in using the log in page. Look for the option Show my name on the users online list: and choose "no."

 It's worth noting that when you do sign in as anonymous it only affects the Active User list - If members are in the same forum that you are in they will see that you are online by your PM button indicating that you are online.

Similarly they will see you as online if the check the memberlist through the same notification

 Just a quick note that user's who select 'Log-In Anonymously' will appear to administrators with an '*' next to their username on the active users list. ;)
