The netbook I want to get has a wireless card "b/g" in it.

So can I take it to like a starbucks that has a wifi spot there and surf the web for free...right?

And if I can pick up a signal from my home, I can cancel my cable internet, correct?

Cause on the box of the netbook, it says

internet service required

I was under the impression, you don't have to pay for anything to surf the web, as long as you are in a wifi spot.

Oh, it also has bluetooth.

Here are the specs...

$379
acer
10.1"
160gb hd
DDR2 1gig ram
atom processor
xp home
6-hour battery run time (I foregot what "cell" it was) a 3? or a 6? for 6 hours?
wireless b/g & bluetooth
wireless mouse
seprate "cd/dvd" optical drive w/usb
carry pouch

Should I get it?

What are your experiences with the atom processor?

If I get it and I can pick up a wifi spot from my home, I should just cancel my cable internet...right?

It depends if the branch/ company offers free wi-fi. With wireless internet you can connect to any modem, but to access the internet sometimes (actually most of the time) you need to type in a 16 digit "WEP" security code, to ensure you're the owner or your have the owner's permission to use it. I'm not sure about Starbucks as it's a British/American chain but most McDonalds and other public restaurants will offer free wi-fi to customers.

When people buy internet they are buying 2 things. Bandwidth and download limit.
If your neighbour's internet is say, 5Mbps and a download limit of 100GB, then when you use it, you'll be making his internet speed about half as fast and you'll also be contributing to his download limit, which he can get charged for exceeding.
Wi-fi isn't something the government pays for, it's a private service that people pay for out of their own money. If you want to steal someone's internet and cancel your own then you're no better than a common thief.

Only if you're in a public hotspot. You'll usually find them in your city's CBD. But if you're at home in a suburb you'll likely have to pay for your own wifi (i.e. Internet Service Provider)

Absolutely not. A new computer is all the more reason to keep or even upgrade your internet package.

It depends entirely on what you want it to do.
Acer make great netbooks and the specs on that are good too. But don't expect to be playing any games on that rig.

Ok, thank you Fernicia. ^_^

One more thing, would I be able to play age of empires and yuri's revenge?

I think I'm going to get it anyways, and play like age of empires while I'm watching tv in my living room or something, lol.

Yeah AoE2 and C&C should be grand as they're fairly old and not too graphically intensive.
Also, you're welcome.

Most people have a secured wireless network so you can't piggyback from them.
Unless you use something to try and crack that pass key. ;)

I would pay for it the legal way. It's not worth getting caught.
