Blue Screen

I've been getting blue screened quite frequently recently and I really have no idea why. The blue screen shuts off too fast for me to see the message (but it's been different every time). I was able to read it this time and I got something about "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". So, I googled it and only got results for XP andsome windows server 2000 thing. I'm using vista 32bit. After it restarts, it runs chkdsk and always finds the file "Acspecfc.dll" which it deletes, then in step 3, it reinstalls it again for some reason. I've googled that and got nada. When the computer starts, it shows the hard drives. Next to them it has the status, and the top one (I have 2) says "Error Occurred" or "Critical Error".

Do you know of any solutions?

It might be easier if you had the full stop code. You can stop the automatic reboot so that you have time to copy down all the details.

(I'm on Win7, but I imagine it will be the same or very similar)

Start > Computer > System Properties > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > Automatically restart. Uncheck that box, and wait for a BSOD.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is almost always caused by driver/hardware failure. See http://www.vistax64.com/vista-performance-maintenance/117691-irql_not_less_or_equal.html

Easyest fix on most problems is a reboot. But if you decide to do that remember that you will loose everything so back up the things you want to keep

Of course, it would help if the right terminology--"reformat," or simply "format," perhaps even "clean installation"--since reboot is the same as saying restart.

A reboot might also do the trick - after all, it is Windows. :)

Are you implying that windows is in some way bugged or different than sane operating systems? If so, shame!

By reboot I get the idea of restart. So what is it that you meant?

Reformat and reinstall windows.

That is, wipe everything clean and start out with a fresh slate.

Is there a simple .exe to wipe everything clean ? XD. To reinstall windows... do I just stick in the vista cd and at startup there will be some sort of magic screen?

Basically, yes, but I implore that you back up any hidden wonders of code you might have hidden in there.

A quick google search (and a quick skim of the page to make sure the data was legit) yielded this tutorial.

If you choose to reformat back-up everything and do a clean install. If you have an IPod you've got yourself a 30gb storage device to help. The reformat process should be about 30min-2hours depending on computer, and then you get the fun of updating drivers. For added fun, if you reformat on an original XP disk you probably wont be able to get internet access until you get ethernet drivers so have a spare internet connection and thumb drive ready.
