Mozilla supports it, and so will Chrome and Safari soon. Should we have support of the <video> tag in the HTML 5 specification. We could do this by having a BBCode [video] tag, which would work a lot like the [flash] tag. For example...

A simple 3rd party script will make this available. For example, Xanikseo's BBCode script would work quite nicely for this task, although I could also create a script that was "standalone." |

A script could be made, but of course full standard integration would be preferable. Perhaps even the <audio> tag so long as it doesn't allow autoplay. |

True, and the [flash] tag does allow autoplay, by the way. At least, I know it does on youtube videos. Edited by Reid., Sep 30 2009, 03:46 PM.

Well videos I don't mind so much, it's just I'm worried people would begin embedding songs in every post and they play over each other in an insanely annoying way XD People tend to do that less with video. |

Embedded Audio in posts could also be a problem for admins as they would constantly have to monitor whether illegal or copyrighted material had been uploaded especially of someone use a service such as Multiply |

Has that part of the standard even been finalized yet? ![]() I do really like the idea of the video tag, but I'm not sure we're the ones to be early adopters. Being one of the first to use something as new at this, that won't work for most people at least for a while, is something you should really think about and understand what it would mean. Taking into account that most administrators that use this fine service of ours don't even know basic HTML, adding support for this tag would just be another influx of complaints, topics and tickets. |

Indeed, it does seem early. However, it's not as early as you might think. YouTube are already playing around with the tag and Firefox has full support for it in 3.5.If this isn't incorporated into the next release, it's definately something to think about throughout 2010. |

Why would we need the video tag to play videos when the flash tag does this already? Does the video tag support something that the flash tag doesn't? Are you just looking to change the names for the BBCode we have (flash --> video)? I'd like t know these things before I form my opinion.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1086886/html-5-video-tag-vs-flash-video-what-are-the-pros-and-cons Also, Mike, songs can already autoplay via the [flash] tag. Keep in mind that embedding an autoplaying song is a simple matter for just about anyone, especially in ZB. Just go to youtube, find a video with the song you want, then use the flash tag with the width/height set at 1 and append &autoplay=1 to the youtube URL and boom, you've got a song embedded. You can find an example here. |

The <video> tag will soon be the succeeder of Flash players and Silverlight players. Even YouTube and Wikimedia are working on implementing it very soon. I can guarantee that it will be used on Wikipedia by next summer. http://prototype.wikimedia.org/sandbox.2/Main_Page http://www.youtube.com/html5 |

They can indeed, although whether they should is another question entirely for many admins. A suddenly playing song can be a dead giveaway in the workplace or school or library ... and a sure way to get a board put on the banned IP list. Just sayin'. |

I actually have a code on my board to remove autoplay videos. I'm not sure if it'll work for all kinds of videos, but it stops the youtube ones.

But you shouldn't need a mod to do it. Besides, the <video> tag gives you full control over autoplays with one simple attribute. |
