I think it was to make them cheaper but not 100% sure.
The 1st PS3 had backwards compatibility but it was too expensive so hardly anyone bought it.
I think sony thought noone really wanted it.

Backwards compatibility was removed for a way to lower costs. But even if a PS3 did still have it, the thing can never read PS2 or PS1 memory cards, so unless you aim to start games all over again, it's not very useful anyway. :/

You can get a memory card to USB device.

Does anyone know why they didn't include backwards compatibility? I remember that was the PS2's biggest selling point back in the day. :-/
I think Sony is exploring the possibility of selling PS2 games on PSN, and if the PS3 is backwards compatible, then there would be less of a market for them. There are rumors that Sony is working on a software fix that will open up backwards compatibility similarly to how the Xbox 360 does backwards compatibility with Xbox 1 games, so maybe Sony has decided against downloadable PS2 games. Then there is also the surprise success of the PS2 after the PS3 released. The thing is still selling 100,000+ consoles each month.

A lot of people assumed that they did it to lower costs, but I'm not sure if that was the main reason for cutting BC.

I would never rebuy my entire library of PS2 games. That's just ridiculous. Even if they do put all games up, I HIGHLY doubt they'd put my favourite one up: Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness. :( I'd love to play it in HD.
Though I suppose the PC version has a lot of better effects so that will do. (Also the PS2 version in the PS2.)

I wonder if any of the games will have graphical improvements?

I think the reason they're not making them backwards compatiable anymore is because there were so many people trading in their ps2s for the ps3...but there is supposed to be an update so you can play your singstar games on the ps3...but I haven't seen it yet

We had the 60g that was backwards compatiable...but it was having laser trouble...so we had to trade it in this week for the slim.

I don't have a Ps3 sadly. The Ps3 slim would be interesting.

I would never trade in my 60GB model for a slimline version. :ermm:

My wife wont let me get rid of my 60Gb backwards compatible PS3 solely because of her old Singstar games :glare:

I would happily sell it otherwise.

I never use backwards compatibility on any system really. I buy new systems for new games and if I want to go back and play older games, I bust out the PS2. I am, however, eying that new God of War Collection. PS2 games remastered in HD with trophies. Looks good!!
