I agree. It's not the first time Microsoft's done something like this and had their hands slapped.

As for ridiculous patents, they've appeared on both sides of that argument.

I think it's disgusting that someone would patent the ability to save something in XML. XML is an open format and is made for open-source things. Patenting a use for it just defeats XML's purpose.

You know, Meph, I had the same thought. Patenting a use for an open standard is not only backwards, but also selfish, and it's an example of one of the problems with software patents.

That's actually surprising to me. Imagine if this verdict goes through...
It already went through. This is an after report. =p

However - Bill Gates got out of his monopoly lawsuit by separating Windows and Microsoft, so I'm sure he'll, and his attorneys, will find a way to scuttle out of this. Change the name, GUI, and the base coding would just about do it.

Changing the name and GUI would potentially have a bigger impact on them than losing their US market.
