Ok, my main goal with the forum that I'm hosting right now has always been to eventually buy a server and host it myself. I have heard that it is a 24 hour job, making sure it is running properly, but what exactly is involved? This was brought home just a few minutes ago when s1 here just went offline. I'm curious now as to what exactly causes the majority of these failures? What sort of difficulties might I run into? Is it worth it? |

Generally speaking, no, it isn't worth it. I would just buy some professional, well known hosting - which are not allowed to post any links for, unfortunately - and let them handle the issues. Just make sure the server supports regular backups. |

The most common issues are power or network failures or harddrive issues. Managing servers is a 24/7 job, in the meaning that something can go wrong at any time. If you have decent monitoring and such, something going wrong just means an email, text message, etc to make sure you know. So while you have to be able to fix problems all the time (or tell somebody else to fix it for you) it doesn't mean you're actually doing something related all the time. Completely managing their own server isn't something most people can do. Its easier to just get a shared hosting account somewhere. |

Or, if you feel the need to, dedicated hosting, which is much more costly but gives you the full power of the server at your disposal. |
