i think more time should be spent enhancing the skills of the coders so they can produce working , non-buggy codes. that in itself will ease up on code support and problems.
I agree. While a plug-in system would be cool, and there would be ways around it to make it work, Dan is right. Working on the fundamentals will produce fewer problems and less hassle of the creator supporting their code.

i would just like to see people who can actually code/script properly...

dont get ahead of ourselves now people.

How rude, Dan! I know you're targeting me with that. :glare:

Anyways, we can all dream about this kind of thing, can't we? :P

Yea me too.

Tony brings snacks for him and Viral.

Having seen a bit of something RDBish, it is a plug-in system (in the way a plug-in system has been mentioned in this topic at least). It will have codes and themes for installation.

I don't know anything about it, other then it exists, but would it not remove the need to use JavaScript codes. ^o) [/not-knowing-coding-either]

Maybe there could be a unique framework to build codes on top of? [/again-not-knowing-coding-either]

Would that eliminate most all support needs and/or compatibility issues?.[/insert-nkce-tag]

All coders, new and old, should head on over to the code university. :r .. huh?, huh? [/advertising-zbcode] :D

.. now pay me my cookies.

Having a Javascript-based coding system would be interesting, at best. It would take quite a bit of Brandon's time to set up the php aspects of it, but, erm, the JS part wouldn't be so bad....

The only structure it could really run off of would be OOP or some other way. Like, maybe.. a certain format (commented format) to show what function needs to be run to execute it, as well as a description, pages to run it on, name of the code, etc etc.. then that could be parsed from the file into a format that a user can read.
Code:

/* <ZBSCRIPT>
name: "My Script"
description: "Erases the board"
execute: "MScript()"
variables: ["board_html","What you want the new page to say"]
</ZBSCRIPT> */
function MScript() {
document.body.innerHTML = board_html;
}
Now that's a very, very, very rough format and stuff, but, in essence, a user would open up a 'scripts' page in their admin CP, click on "new script", paste the code in that they want, then hit "Next."

On the next page it gives the name of the code, the description, and then it asks you to fill in the variables that are defined there, and it gives the description of the variables as well. You fill those in, then it plugs them right in front of the script, and then sticks that in the board template automatically.

That's a very rough format - in fact, it would be 100x easier if the data in the ZBSCRIPT imaginary tags was in JSON format, that way it could pass between PHP/JS as needed - so, it's definitely not finished and there's a lot of stuff that would have to change, but it gives a general idea on how a system might work.

there are many things that could happen or should happen. but if this plug-in system were to work properly coders old and new need to know how to script properly. not just working for this theme or that theme or this browser or that browser. is it hard to get it to work on everything? sometimes it is. sometimes its not. i can bet that if done properly it will already work in almost everything and little editting will need to be done to get it all to work.

there are times were plain old school JS should be used and other times where jQuery might be the better route. you cant use jQuery for everything and everything. not always the best way to go.

if this were to happen or going to happen or will happen just at a later time, this plug-in system should be very strict on who or what codes get in there.

I would be more than happy to help code for a plug-in system or make codes that people want. I already take most of the codes i make straight out of the feedback and suggestions forums here and other boards.

Important Question Time: Premium or non Premium?
Ooh, good one Viral. I would say it would have to be non premium, due to the large amounts of test boards that would be needed by the coders themselves to ensure compatibility.

personally they should have it premium to start off with. have a select few with premium test boards to see how it works inprivate than full blown it to non premium

.....

We'll cross that bridge when Brandon has actually finished the feature, then he'll post a gleeful announcement about it with all the info you want, how it'll work etc. Just be patient.

Until then it's....shhhh a secret :ph34r: *cough*
