I'd be cool to see a Zetaboards feature where you can rate posts. At the bottom of each post, there'd be little stars or something and each user can rate a post. It's a nice way of letting users know if their content is liked. Am I right? |

It's probably possible already with a code but if it were a feature it would have to be one that could easily be disabled as on some forums it could cause friction |

I've seen a code for exactly this somewhere, and would have considered it apart from the fact that I'd prefer a system that rated threads rather than posts. But it does exist, and I'll have a look for it for you ![]() Edit: Found it but it's not on this forum so I can't link you to it. But if you search the directory for coding/modification forums, especially one that specialises in ZetaBoard Codes, you should be able to find what you require. Edited by Lout, Jun 21 2009, 04:38 PM.

Such feature would be a cool addition in the future indeed, or at least a mod for it, if there isn't alerady one (if even possible as a modification). Some people are against such thing, because they think it can cause friction, but some people prefer a more democratic way to judge people posts, kinda like Youtube comments (altough it's kinda biased since on YOutube, there are still many people who rate comments based on if they disagree or agree with what the person said instead of rating the comments based on their constructiveness) |

Isn't the whole point of forums to agree or disagree with what other people have posted? Why bother to post at all, when you can just tick a box instead? |

Uhm, you don't just tick a box, and forums purpose are to discuss subjects and share your opinion. I'm not sure where you get that from. I assume you never visited Youtube or don't have an account there then. On youtube, people can comment on videos. But Youtube comment system allows registered users to rate up/down comments. The normal purpose of this rating system is to let users judge what comment is constructive and what not. If for example the person just says "you're gay" then it gets rated down and when the person give his point of view on the video and stating why, then it gets rated up. Of course, it's not used for this purpose all the time, but normally it should be this way. On a large forum, if the moderators could view the negatively rated vs positively rated comment ratio of a member, then it would be easier for them to judge if an use annoys others or not for example and judge if he should be banned or not based on the content. Else, post rating can be used in some sort of democratic way to warn users they are causing trouble or something. It's a bit hard to explain and english is not my native language, not to mention such topic often triggered controversy on forums, as some people are extremly against comment rating systems |

[bump]I'm pretty sure IPB3 has it, as well as many other things Brandon should consider adding (multi-quote, community blogs page (most recent blog entries, anyone? -- it'd sure make them a little more active than they are now), gallery, advanced search features, better profile (comment, friend, latest visitors, etc..) pages, etc..). I know people can simply create an account on Facebook and MySpace, but why bother when you can already accomplish the same on a forum with a community you're already part of?[/bump] |

Rating posts (and users) has led to more dissension among members than anything else on the boards I belong to that use it. It may be intended to be helpful, but posters wind up building alliances and snarling at each other based on who they're friends with, not the quality of the post itself. In the end it makes a lot more work for the mods who wind up refereeing these feuds. If something like this is ever implemented in Zeta it would have to be optional, because we absolutely refuse to have it on our board. |

In my opinion, almost every feature should be optional. |

I'd like to see both of those. But as for the topic in question and the 'better' profile, I agree with silvershoes. What would that entail?

I already found the code this person is referring to. It is not the feature I am looking for. Any comments on this feature by the staff? |

In my opinion this would make a far better third party modification as opposed to an official system feature. The need for a rating system has been under-requested, and it's usually only the exciting/useful/popular ideas that make it through to official features. If a smaller group of people started requesting this it could potentially become a Premium feature... maybe. We haven't heard anything from Brandon that would suggest he's working on a rating system for posts. |

The only problem is that a decent post-rating feature should require PHP. 90% of ZB users probably don't know anything about PHP, and wouldn't know how to set a script up that requires it. Back when I made a shout box that used the forum to store shouts (using only JavaScript), I had hundreds of PMs by users asking for help in using the script. It's just not something you can expect everyone to be able to wrap their heads around. Topic- and post-rating features would be a nice, optional addition to any board -- especially if you were able to enable them only in specific forums. I could see galleries and whatnot benefiting from them quite a bit. |

I could easily modify this code to only work in selected threads and/or forums, and rename it to something like Votes or whatever you fancied really. |

Or you could just use this. |
