What is Java Hut?

Community Chat is a more relaxed forum, a place where members can relax and engage in informal conversation on all manner of things. Java Hut, in contrast, focuses on deeper subjects and thorough discussion. From theology to philosophy, current affairs and history, biology, chemistry, physics, right up to art and literature and general feelings; Java Hut invites you to examine the universe, from the brightest star to the smallest detail on the ground, and share your thoughts and opinions

As such, the guidelines laid out below describe the higher standards expected of posts and will be enforced more rigorously. This is to ensure we can foster and sustain an environment of maturity and respect; this is the commitment made by the Staff. We hope that you too will show your commitment by reading and following these guidelines. ^-^

Java Hut Guidelines

Posted Image Remember the Board Rules!
Please remember that the standards as described in the Board Rules apply to here too!

Posted Image Look before you post!
New topics are always welcome, and a fresh insight or approach is highly valued, but before you create a new discussion please check the first few pages to see if a similar topic exists.

Posted Image Use clear titles and offer an introduction!
An ambiguous title can lead to confusion - try to make the best of your topic title so that it's clear what the subject matter is. But even a good title won't make up for a poor start, be sure to introduce the subject in your first post. Don't just state the issue and ask for opinions - explain a little about the topic, even throw out some opinions (be they your own or from other sources), just to get the ball rolling. Remember that backing statements with facts is particularly helpful for hotly discussed topics, in particular those of theology and science. And don’t be afraid to come at topics objectively: arguing a side can create boundaries that stifle progress and discussion.

Posted Image Quality counts!
As pointed out above, Java Hut is held to higher standards than other forums and therefore it is expected that posts are not continually short. Occasionally a snappy response may be warranted but otherwise, the rule of thumb is that posts should be at least a paragraph long (3-4 sentences). Also stay on topic and avoid going off on tangents; if the current discussion generates interest in a different topic on the same subject, the posts may be split into a new topic.

Posted Image Assume good faith!
We all have our opinions and not all of them agree - where opinions conflict and collide, it's all too easy to become fixated on proving yourself right and quickly debaters can become embroiled in a feud. Always be sure to assume good faith until it is proven otherwise - the intentions of the individual are seldom malicious; just because someone disagrees with you does not mean you need to belittle or attack them. Instead, engage in a discussion; make it your aim to share your ideas, beliefs or opinions for the sake of it. Sometimes half the fun is learning what others think!
If you suspect a post is malicious or violates these rules, please use the Report Post function to inform us.

Posted Image Don't get personal!
You may begin to feel agitated or fatigued by someone staunchly defending an opposing opinion but don't fall into the trap of attacking the person rather than the argument. Again, assume good faith but be sure to avoid slandering the individual.

Posted Image Above all, respect one another!
Whenever you post, whatever the post is about - a new discussion, an agreement, a rebuttal, a question or query - you should always make sure that you remain respectful. Respect does not demand utter agreement, an aversion to citing an opinion contrary to someone else's or unnecessary pleasantries; it merely requires that you treat the individual the way you want to be treated: be civil and thoughtful. And where someone is not adhering to this, do not respond in kind. Rise above it and ignore it, or report it to a Moderator. Lowering yourself to petty squabbling, no matter how you justify it, will only force the topic off track and staff intervention will be necessary. Help the staff: avoid confrontations and report problems.

Who do I contact...?
For anything that may require immediate or urgent attention, such as any problems or issues arising in a topic or if you would like a potential topic clarified, you should seek out an online Community Moderator OR Stephen. Should neither be available, contact should default to any online Support Team members. If there is an issue that requires urgent or immediate attention, please contact Stephen or Brian if they are online, else default to any available staff.

If you have any questions or queries, complaints or problems, or any suggestions to help improve Java Hut, please feel free contact any of the existing Community Moderators or drop Stephen a pm. We value your feedback. A fresh perspective is always welcome, so do share anything you think might improve the Java Hut experience. ^-^
