In February 2006, the Java Hut forum was created. It served as a new area for users to discuss more serious issues that seemed ignored in Community Chat. Discussions on issues such as the Middle East, Politics, World Events and general philosophical questions opened up a new avenue of discussion for members of the Support board. The forum proved popular when we briefly had separate support boards from 2007-2008. When users returned to this support board, it seemed as if interest in the forum had waned. Many of the discussion topics had been discussed multiple times before and new ideas seemed to be ignored. In February, nearly 3 years after its creation, the Java Hut forum was hidden for renovation. The Staff and members of the Community Think Tank intensely discussed ways to improve the forum and garner more attention to interest new members. While not every suggestion was used, many were incorporated into this new Java Hut. The most dramatic change is that this forum utilizes the joinable group feature. While all members may read topics in this forum, they can not post. However, if they wish to reply and start discussion topics of their own, they simply need to edit their profile and join the Java Hut group. They can then immediately begin posting. I would like to take the time to address why this was done. Unlike most of the Community Forums, Java Hut appeals to a very small percentage of users. Many have said that they do not post in the forum and many do not understand what it is about. When users registered on this board and posted in Java Hut without understanding its purpose, it resulted in several problems. Discussions strayed off topic. Duplicate topics were discussed. There were behavioral troubles as well. In an effort to ensure that everyone utilizes this forum to its full potential, the joinable group feature will allow anyone who wants to post in the forum the ability to do so. Those who do not wish to post, can simply enjoy reading the discussions that take place. The second major change to Java Hut would be the focus on discussion. Many misinterpreted Java Hut to be nothing more than a debate forum. In truth, when it was created, Java Hut was designed to be a forum for serious discussion on anything ranging from world events and politics to movies, television, literature and art. However, this aspect was consistently overlooked. In an effort to promote this other aspect, several Community Events will be run periodically to encourage more discussion in these neglected areas. One of the key events will be the formation of Book Club. Each month, a book will be selected by the club and members will be able to read and discuss the book in depth with each other. The first book chosen is 1984 by George Orwell. I have made this choice because many members and staff have read this book and love to discuss the idea of Orwellian society and the modern day Big Brother. For those who have always been curious about the book, I encourage you to go to your local library and check out a copy and come join us for discussion. Lastly, I hope you will all enjoy this forum and use it to its full potential. To aid you in this, myself along with several staff and members of the think tank have fulled the first page of this forum with topics to serve as a model for you to follow when creating your own topics. You will note that many contain their own Topic Rules. These rules are designed to allow for discussion to remain on point and avoid straying off into other areas. If there is something specific you wish to discuss, topic rules will help steer the course of discussion. I am very proud of the progress we have made with this new forum and I hope you are as well. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact a Community Moderator or myself. We're happy to answer any questions you have about Java Hut.
