I have this e-mail account that I no longer want to use, and it's in hotmail. But I still use the address for MSN messenger, so I don't want to delete it. How would I set up the account so that no more mail comes through to me? |

I don't think there's any way for you to disable your account and still use it for messenger. You could forward any e-mails sent to you right to another address though. Would that be something you'd be interested in? Will |

But that would defeat the purpose of closing this account since all the unwanted mail would come to my other address. As of now I've left a vacation message on that should automatically reply to anyone sending me mail to that account, which says that the address is no longer taking mail. I forwarded any relevant mail so there's nothing in there that's important. |

You could forward it to a dummy account, no?

Hmm... I guess that would work. But I don't know if it's necessary if I'm not going to use hotmail with that address anymore.

Why not just no longer log into that account to check email? Change your settings to whitelist only if they provide it. FearKiller is not a Hotmail user. |

That's more or less what I think I would do. Basically, I want to close my hotmail account because I'm getting about 20 spam a day, and it's just a lot of unnecessary mail. I have a Gmail account that is about half old that I would rather use. If you mail something to an unrecognized/nonexistent address, it bounces back with a "Delivery Failure" notice. I've noticed that if you try to reply to a spammer, it bounces back like that. That's the kind of effect I want to achieve, so it's clear to the sender that the account is no longer in use. I guess having the away message on and not logging in is the best option, even though it feels like it's incomplete. Even if I whitelist it, all the mail would go to the junk, and the away message would actually not be sent to senders whose mail are junked. Edit: I tested out what Will suggested and it seemed to work. But the Delivery Failure notice shows not my hotmail account, but the made-up address. And it doesn't show the away message because it's a direct forwarding that skips my hotmail account. So it's a toss-up: should I enable forwarding or the away message? Edit: Actually, I decided to forward all mail to this address: <e-mail account>-at-hotmail.com-address-is-no-longer-taking-email-please-contact-using-other-ways@hotmail.com

FYI, its also possible to use MSN with a non-hotmail/msn/live/... address (ie Gmail, Yahoo mail, or your own domain name.) That is what my personal preference is. It means people have just one* address to contact me trough, and I control it pretty much completely. *: Well, not really. Having your own domain leads to having different inboxes for different things.

Might Google search for MailWasher Free 6.5 and just have everyting marked as spam and deleted. Can also bounce back emails to make it look like thier is no longer an account with that address. Edited by Dale, May 24 2009, 01:03 AM.

don't login to hotmail for 30 days. your email account will be suspended, but the msn account will still be active. |
