I'm really happy to hear this after all the machinations I have had to go through to keep spam off my boards.

If this is totally passive, is it in place already? Or will there be changes in the way users register?

It wouldn't surprise me if something like this was already in place, I've implemented so many anti spam measures including a hidden forum for first timers to post after which they are auto promoted to Full Member status, and enforcing Admin validation, however the last 2 weeks have seen virtually no attempts to sign up by the spammers after around 500 or so in the previous 2 months.

As LagerLout surmised, we've been running some of it for about 2 weeks now. While it's not fully in place, what we have running has been rather successful in drastically cutting down on spam registrations. :)

I'm glad to hear it. Not only does it free you up from all the validating, but it doesn't have to inconvenience your members with CAPTCHA's on every page either. :)

This is great......after checking I have found that I haven't had a single spam bot registration attempt or completion since February 19th. I was getting 3-5 a day that completed email validation, and about 300 a month that stayed in the validation queue. I have just removed the 5700+ spambot members that I had trapped in my spambot pen. :D

I'm going to wait another week or two before I remove the "traps" just to be sure, but it looks at this point like the measures taken have been completely effective.

It's nice to see an end to those pesky bots and their junk posts. Hopefully they will never figure out how to get around it so it stays this way.

One day spambots will be powerful enough to guess admins passwords and take over forums and turn them into spam sites and we'll be powerless against them

j/k this is a nice feature, one person I know still runs an IF board and should be happy with this.

I'm really glad to hear that. Brandon will be happy to hear it's been so successful as well.

It would be interesting to know how you've managed to keep them at bay so successfully, as in exactly what measures have been implemented?

Why? So the measures can be broken. :-/

Not exactly a good thing to tell people is it.

That's fair enough, I was just curious as to how the system can differentiate between legitimate members and spambots as we've had a few issues with members not being able to access the board at times.

Obviously, it's not something that any of us can actually see which makes it all the harder for the people who make the software that creates bots to break it. That just ensures that it's not likely to be compromised so we shouldn't have to worry about bots ever again. :D
