Also, I would never consider not looking far (how ever far it might be) to my right before joining a heavy flow of fast traffic. I damn sure don't want to meet a lorry mid-merge.

..those little bubble mirrors you put on the corner of your regular mirrors are always a good idea. :)
I have the addition of circular mini-mirrors attached to my door mirrors. Same thing no?
Yes, those are probably the same mirrors I was talking about.
Little convex thingies to give a wide view..
And yeah, one of the first things you should learn about driving is to check your mirrors often (at least once every 10 seconds, preferably every 5) but never to rely on them, so you should pretty much always turn your head when merging or backing up, even at 3am when you don't see any traffic.

I found out they've got these cool machines where you pay for something at the cash register and then the cashier doesn't have to count your change, the machine spits it out at you. I was thoroughly impressed by this technology.

Necessity is the mother of invention, they say.
PhranK points out that 98% of Americans are too stupid to make change properly, so those machines help prevent all the wasted time and angry customers that letting cashiers count for themselves would cause.
