Yes, those are probably the same mirrors I was talking about. Little convex thingies to give a wide view.. And yeah, one of the first things you should learn about driving is to check your mirrors often (at least once every 10 seconds, preferably every 5) but never to rely on them, so you should pretty much always turn your head when merging or backing up, even at 3am when you don't see any traffic.
