Ever since IE7 came out, it's been my belief that the best course of action is to only support the latest version of Internet Explorer. Anything less than that up until now will probably force you to either compromise your design in some way or work longer hours writing that IE-specific stylesheet. Nowadays, IE8 will render CSS2 just as well as the other major browsers—you can see a list of supported properties on MSDN. But if your heart's set on supporting the now-outdated versions, I won't stop you. Posted Image

As another approach, you could also check out the ie7-js project (more from the author here). It is "a JavaScript library to make Microsoft Internet Explorer behave like a standards-compliant browser." I don't have any personal experience with it, but it might be interesting.
